Thomas Tuchel on Manuel Neuer: “We have Manu back in training, and that’s outstanding, we’re very proud of him. Yesterday we decided together with him that Sven Ulreich would start in goal against Mainz and probably against Galatasaray in order to give Manu more training sessions. Despite all the euphoria, it is important not to become hectic and not to rush things”

Tuchel on the personnel: “We need to wait a bit with Joshua Kimmich. He trained for the first time yesterday. It’ll be tight. Noussair Mazraoui, Serge Gnabry, Dayot Upamcano and Raphaël Guerreiro are out. Everyone else can train. Leon Goretzka is still a doubt. He has a knock. It’ll be about how he handles the pain.”

Tuchel on Mazraoui: “It’s a complex matter. I’m happy about the clear statement that the club made. I 100% stand by the content of the statement. The topic goes far beyond football. Of course I spoke with Nous because he’s my player. I don’t want to go into the details of the conversation. We also spoke to Daniel Peretz - his family and friends are in Israel. It’s our duty to speak to him and see whether football is possible. How the two interact with each other? A dressing room is independent of religious and cultural differences, it’s always a place where you work towards a common goal peacefully, friendly and with comradery. I have big trust in the team, in the influence of the dressing room. We know that you can overcome tough circumstances together.”

Tuchel on Daniel Peretz: “It’s tough for me to put myself in his place. We’re trying to stand alongside him. We don’t have a healing world in the changing room but it has a healing effect. We need to ask Daniel how he’s doing. It’s a really sensitive topic, especially for Daniel, whose family are directly affected. We’ll look after him.”

Tuchel on tomorrow’s game: “Mainz love the role of the underdog. They’ve cultivated it. It’s a strength of theirs, especially at times when things aren’t going well. It’s something we need to face up against. We were in good form, had one of our best games against Freiburg. Now we’ve had an international break and are training again for the first time with the whole team today, but there are different situations. I’m pleased we’re playing at 18:30. It’s not just about how we play football but also how we play physically. We’re expecting a lot of long balls, lots of battling for the second balls. I’m well aware of what’s coming our way.”

Tuchel on Jérôme Boateng: “He’s accepted the offer to train with the reserves. Since the reserves have been training with us, he was part of training. His behavior is exemplary and he’s at a very good sporting level.”

Tuchel on the centre-back duo for tomorrow: “We’re planning with Matthijs de Ligt and Minjae Kim at centre-back. Matthijs has trained fully again and is ready for tomorrow”

Tuchel on Uli Hoeneß’ recent criticism: “I saw that. I have a very open, direct relationship with Uli Hoeneß, with a lot of appreciation. Nothing has changed about that”

Tuchel on Neuer: “He deserves the greatest respect, the greatest praise. His quality in training is obvious. We all have to slow down a bit now - because it’s been 10 months. It would be best now for him to train more with our centre-backs. The target is the home game against Darmstadt. I’m 100% convinced that he’ll be 100% up to his level.”

With Guerreiro out, Kimmich and Goretzka possibly aswell, who do you think will play at the 6?

I personally would love to see Krätzig play in midfield.

Huh. The general consensus is that dismissing Nagelsmann was premature, and it would have been right to give him more time—at least until the end of the season.

I don’t understand how this sentiment translates to criticizing Tuchel, though?

Hoeneß criticised Tuchel because he was very vocal in the media regarding transfers, especially the whole CDM discussion. Has nothing to do with Nagelsmann.

Ah, okay, makes sense in that context. My mind was still stuck on his musings about Nagelsmann, I can’t keep up with the Hoeneß!
