Yeah, I wouldn’t really know about any of the narratives around our players or the club if not for people complaining about it.
I will say, its likely that it was a talking point in a podcast because its a break week and they needed something to fill a minute or so.
yea they didn’t really linger on it (james hadnt even seen those strange posts) so i wasn’t so much annoyed at them and not even individually annoyed at the person that asked the question, its just that that sort of dialogue is so common that I find tiring. It just doesn’t seem so negative in other sports. And I do find myself giving into some of that negative thinking too, like I can much easier watch teams I don’t like do well in other sports, or admit that a player I don’t like it was quite good moreso than I can with football, and I think I’m usually a pretty objective person. I wonder if another factor is the lack of playoffs (I’m American so all of the other sports I watch have that), so every game is so meaningful, which causes people to be rooting so hard against rivals, whereas other sports, you can watch a regular season game of a rival that doesnt really matter to your team as much, so you can be a little more objective.
Perhaps, i do think there is a level to it where each game feels like the most important one in the EPL. And for us it is because to beat or even challenge City for the title you need to be at or near perfection. We haven’t lost a match, we’ve dropped 4 total points, we’re tied for first points, and have done this with limited use of jesus, partey, martinelli. Yet people are still upset and find things to yell about online.
Its exhausting.
Let alone the obsession with other clubs, as you mention. Spurs aren’t allowed to be good because they’re spurs, but they are indeed objectively better as a team and more fun to watch now than they were a year ago. Does it mean that they will finish top 2? no. Does it mean I want them to do well? absolutely not. but I like to watch fun attractive football. The entire activity is better when its enjoyable to watch.
