What would be a good investment now? I want no-frills Linux support, good CPU, lots of RAM, decent screen. If I’m actually working, I’m almost always docked, but when not, I would not mind a good battery as well. I want this primarily for personal use. I don’t mind upgrading parts myself (if that’s still possible), like getting a stronger SSD or something.
I used to own a T420 (and some other ThinkPads as well, but this one was used). It was an incredible investment at the time, used laptop price, build quality and feature on par with laptops 6, 7, 8 years younger. I wonder if this is still something you can get away with.

As someone with an X220 i recommend getting something newer at this point. The thing hits 85-90C with video playback and new paste. I think a modern one with a Ryzen or something is probably a better idea.

A non-limited classic design for the X series would be great (the 25th anniversary T series equivalent is like 1500USD on ebay) but I’ve used a T470s and it’s honestly pretty comparable to the old models with the only meaningful drawback being less key travel but for less backpain if you need to carry it anywhere I think it’s a worthwhile tradeoff.

Yes, one of the reasons I changed my T420 for something newer. I have a Tuxedo Pulse, and I’m…well, satisfied with it. But I’m not super happy, it feels wobbly and flimsy.
Framework?
I looked at those, and they look good, and great reviews and all. My question is, can you get them used, and for a decent price? I guess I missed highlighting it in my question - I want to buy used, so that the price isn’t bad, but still get decent hardware. That was quite possible with the old thinkpads, is it already possible to get used Frameworks?
