I just installed GraphenOS as my daily driver yesterday, and so far it’s been smooth. I decided to go all in on FOSS applications and avoid Google Play Services entirely.

So anyone have any recommendations for common replacements? So far I’ve got:

  • Florisboard for my keyboard
  • Signal for messaging
  • NewPipe for Youtube
  • Organic Maps for navigation
  • Bitwarden for password management
  • Aegis for 2FA

and that’s about it. I’ve been trying to find something for Spotify, other than ditching it entirely, but I’ve had no luck. My partner pays for a duo account, but if there’s an alternative I’m ears.

If you have a desktop computer, you could run a Jellyfin mediaserver.

Torrent media and run your own personal Netflix.

Look into apps like radarr, sonarr, prowlarr etc, there are lots of guides online.

Soulseekqt for pirating music and host your own Spotify with navidrome. (Or use jellyfin has a music player as well).

If you want to selfhost a full jellyfin webserver on the wider internet and not just your local network, you can look into cloudflared Argo Tunnels, which will allow you to selfhost even if you have a dynamic IP.

This is a little more advanced than just local hosting, but feels pretty epic when your friends and family all cancel Netflix and start using your Jellyfin server instead.

Grats on going degoogled, btw. It’s a tough bandaid to rip off, but so worth it.

Oh! I got some great recommendations!

    I use:

    • ViMusic for music (free, don’t quote me but I believe it uses Spotify and YouTube APIs for music?)
    • OpenBoard for keyboard (I found a GitHub Fork that included swipe to text but can’t remember the name - doesn’t work great anyways)
    • Checkout LibreTube as an alternative to NewPipe
    • LibreTorrent for torrenting (kinda buggy sometimes but better than any other FOSS alternatives)
    • UntrackMe for redirecting site links to privacy-friendly frontends (YouTube->Piped, Reddit->libreddit, etc)
    • Quillnote for notes (its simply the best, I have tried a lot of other note apps)
    • Checkout Magic Earth (it’s not FOSS but it takes a strong stance on privacy and uses OpenStreetMaps)
    • Trusty ol’ VLC Media Player

Libretorrent hasn’t been updated for over a year, would that make it potentially unsafe to use?

I am not sure. I have yet to find a good FOSS Android torrent client. I have experienced annoying bugs and crashing with all them that I have tested and LibreTorrent seems to be the most stable.

There’s a whole slew of backends for UnifiedNlp on F-Droid. Be it GSM, Wifi, radio cells or (dafuq!?) train lines Wifi.

Ente offers E2EE photo backup (and a 2FA app). If you used google photos before, ente offers one gigabyte of photo data for free.

Mozilla Thunderbird and ProtonMail are some good apps for managing email. I’ve also heard good things about FairEmail but have not used it myself.

There’s also Skiff worth checking out for email. Their work is looking really good. They’re still in an early development stage but from my testing, it looks good.

Their company is in the USA however.
