I’m having a hard time deciding between the Eureka Mignon Filtro and the new Fellow Opus. Since I’m aiming for single dosing, I was leaning towards the Opus. I’ve seem people complaining about retention on Eureka Filtro.
But the prices are seriously making me have second thoughs. In Europe the Opus costs around 250€, quite more than the 180€ Eureka price. Which one would you pick?
I own the Eureka - for my purposes, and the price I paid, it’s fantastic. It grinds great for filter coffee, and I can fine tune it to my heart’s content. It gives nice, consistent results.
But you’re right, the retention is not good. I’m looking into getting some sort of 3D printed bellows so I can flush out the retained grounds - I’ve otherwise resorted to tapping the hopper a good few times to get the last gram or two out.
I did originally consider the Fellow Ode 2 or the Opus but the price was just too much. I’m sure they’re excellent but I couldn’t justify spending so much money, €180 for the Eureka is already quite a lot.
thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve seem indeed people using 3D printed bellows and an inclined platform to deal with retention. But these mods aren’t very cheap.
what about the baratza esp?
That also seems like a great option. Unfortunately, it is as expensive as the opus. But I will consider that option
That’s a tough one. I would say if you want to just do filter coffee, go with the Eureka. The Opus claims to do it all but typically, a jack of all trades is a master of none. However, if you do anticipate getting into espresso, it may be worth saving up for the Opus.
I’m not planning on doing espresso for now, but I like the idea of having that open possibility. Thanks for the input 🙂
My use case is mostly espresso with an occasional crank out to coldbrew, which is a bit different than “filter,” but I’ll say I’m very pleased with the Turin SK40 I picked up a few weeks ago so far. I was also eyeballing the Baratza Encore ESP and Fellow Opus in the same general price/performance class, and decided to take a gamble on a fancy option from a smaller “manufacturer”.
I quote because, as far as I can tell, it’s an ODM customized Guangzhou Itop IT-CG100B variant, but none of the other dealers seem to have a version with the step-less adjust worm, side switch, apparently the burrs vary, etc.
The workflow is lovely, retention is nearly nonexistent, noise is not obnoxious, adjustment is easy and precise, etc. Longevity, obviously, remains to be seen.
That is interesting, I will for sure give a look at other options. Unfortunately, Turin does not seem to be available in europe. But I will search thoroughly later
Have you looked at Hoffman’s review of the fellow on YouTube? I think the fellow is a very strong choice
Hoffmann hasn’t yet reviewed the Opus, only the Ode 1 and 2, as far as I know

As the other guy said, I’m considering the fellow opus, not ode. But the fellow ode 2 seems fantastic (although, way above my price range)
Just ordered my first electric grinder yesterday. Got an ode v1 refurbished for like $150 from fellow and free shipping. Seems like a decent deal and can always upgrade the burrs later if I’m itching for more. Will let you know how it compares to my usual hand grinder and v60.

Just came in the mail. Ground at setting 3 (somewhat randomly) and did 16g coffee, 50 bloom then 4x50 v60 in 30sec intervals with 105f water. The grind is definitely more consistent than my hand grinder and at this setting was finer than what I’ve been grinding at for sometime. What stands out in this first cup is the great mouthfeel. But taste is too strong, muddled and not sweet enough. Looking forward to experimenting. Next time I’ll go a bit coarser and see what happens. The grinder itself is a work of art with excellent build quality.
