Or simply reconnect to the internet and try again.’ I am connected to the internet. As far as I am aware there is no Microsoft store for Android, and anyway I bought the game on the Google Play Store, so why shouldn’t I be able to play it?

It’s possible for apps to check with Google Play services that you’ve actually bought them and didn’t just install an apk. It can’t make that check if you’ve disabled Google Play though. Most games on Steam for example work the same way.
