It’s bittersweet
Congrats! Indeed, it’s truly the end of an era. What did you block though? I have a 17-year-old who has never had anything blocked. Always PC though. never seemed to be an issue.
Not OP, but for me, I basically blocked staying up too late on a school night, and excessive time in game (not PlayStation though)
I had to do that with everything. We had to block the TV, the Internet, the PCs, the Xbox, and basically anything that could provide entertainment because my son would get up after we went to bed and stay up all night long. It was a frustrating phase for sure.
I feel lucky i never felt the need to block anything other than one year in middle school I had our entire Wi-Fi router shut off around 11pm for a couple of hours. That only lasted a couple of months.
If anything I’m relieved that don’t have to deal with the whole Parent Account with Child sub accounts. That whole set up is poorly implemented by Sony/PS in my experience… navigating the menus and accounts was torture over the years
My daughter is 3 right now, so no PS account just yet but this made me very sad.
Also, I hope you don’t mind me posting this here but I’m the lead mod of !playstation@lemmy.world . You should come and join us! All dad’s are welcome!
I don’t know the cutoff for this, and while it is certainly within their rights to upgrade, I hope you guys had a chat about it and expectations.
Yes they can make their own decisions.
No, not all gaming communities are friendly, even for adults. Look at League of Legends - it’s a cesspit; at least it was way back in 2010-2012 when I was playing.
They can do this at age 18.
You cannot expect to control a legal adults account.
The surprise is that it doesn’t automatically occur.
Again, I point out I wasnt aware at what age they were able to change account status.
I also didn’t say anything about controling legal adults. I did suggest talking with them though. You know. Like adults do.
Sure talk to them but a parent should be ding that before the child turns 18. It should be part of the discussion around why restrictions are in place.
“The world is full of terrible people” isn’t a discussion to save for adulthood.
True stuff, to be fair, LoL is quite better nowadays. The average age of players has grown with the game, I had a game with two other 30+ year olds and we were joking about it, when we got destroyed we were still cracking jokes.
Results may vary, but it definitely isn’t as bad.
