I don’t know why people are pushing this kind of misinformation and disinformation so hard, maybe they staked their careers on saying the sky had fallen and they are realizing at some level deep down that the sky hasn’t fallen… I don’t know but the below is nonsense.

Three U.S. Army officers, Colonel Timothy Price, Captain Patrick Visser, and Captain Andrew Carter, concluded that Ukraine did not employ mobile warfare tactics in Operation Vivaldi. This is a tactic Ukraine had previously used in 2023.

This term refers to the use of a large ground force, supported by air strikes and artillery, to decisively break through enemy lines, then quickly move military vehicles and soldiers into the unprotected rear areas of a panicked enemy, aiming to inflict maximum damage and gain as much territory as possible.

That is not how the Ukrainian 3rd Corps has been conducting its five-month-long and ongoing counteroffensive. Officers Price, Visser, and Carter argue that Ukraine has “reclaimed territory by systematically isolating the enemy, area by area, while applying pressure on positions.”

Even notably successful offensive operations, such as the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps’ recent defeat of the 20th Combined Arms Army’s bridgehead over the Zherebets River, had little to do with maneuver warfare. They won through systematic, geometric interdiction [geometric interdiction lol? come on seriously just say armored maneuver warfare done carefully…] and positional pressure along Jominian lines rather than breakthrough-driven cognitive shock, leaving no opportunity to transition to a decisive breakout-exploitation phase.

…

Penetration is the purpose of the multidomain breach. It is not decisive in itself, but it opens the door for maneuver to create effects that fires alone cannot. Those effects are exploitation into the enemy rear areas and the seizure of key terrain in depth. This restores the operational logic of maneuver warfare, inducing cascading systems collapse in the enemy and turning a tactical breakthrough into an operational breakout.

How is this not just describing armored maneuver warfare conducted against an extremely difficult and numerically overwhelming opponent?

David Axe and these commentators seem to believe that because Ukraine’s operations took extensive planning and extensive saturation of drones along with other shaping operations to set the stage for small, precise gains… that this is somehow different than the same species of problem that has faced forces that are attempting to conduct armored maneuver and it is absurd on the face of it… what does David Axe think this used to look like? The only difference between what David Axe is saying Ukraine isn’t doing and what Ukraine is actually doing is a level of scale and magnitude, which comes naturally as the opponent begins to collapse as russia is.
