One should leave 12ft/3m of space under a bat house, because the bats drop out around half of that height, so they need clearance.
The other half of that clearance is so that other animals, especially our springy feline friends, can’t just sit under it like it’s a food dispenser! 😼
Popping out like a MANPAD Before engaging thrust
I know this is a dual concern for bat houses.
One should leave 12ft/3m of space under a bat house, because the bats drop out around half of that height, so they need clearance.
The other half of that clearance is so that other animals, especially our springy feline friends, can’t just sit under it like it’s a food dispenser! 😼
12 feet is more than 3.6 meters. (just don’t want any bonked bat heads or fat cats)
Usually I have to convert units myself, but I thought I had gotten lucky this time.
I clicked through, and the “3” is linked to a PDF from a Canadian Bat org that says 3 meters (no feet given).
So it looks like you’re the first person that checked anyone’s work.
Looking at more sources, 12 feet good, 20 feet better seems the most common answer, with a few still saying 9 feet (2.74 meters) is minimum.
