I feel like I’ve seen an uptick in articles posted here that are covering cyclists or pedestrians getting killed in car crashes. I understand that this community is centered around our hatred for cars but seeing a constant feed of deaths by cars isn’t really what I want. I would prefer memes, discussions on how to improve things, and articles about policy etc instead of an endless stream of daily deaths.
How do you feel about these posts?

I don’t like them, it feels like a cheap emotional manipulation in a way. I understand that you would like to share these here, especially if this happened to someone you knew or near you. I’m not blaming everyone who shared these or say they have bad intention. It just doesn’t add anything to the table IMO.
We all know the danger that they represent, no need to make everyone even more anxious about cycling and other alternative ways to travel.
I really wondered if I should block this community because of that.
Yeah, don’t like them. You’re not gonna find a useful discussion under these posts. And they’re depressing, without anything you can do about that particular event.
I would much rather this community be about celebrating alternative mobility than just being angry at cars.
More than 1ilion people die every year due to cars. We could have 136 death posts every hour…

Edit: the death posts are largely one user btw. Blocking that user works too. That user could perhaps open a me community to post these in. They are useful, but not here imo
Agree. I like to see activism, construction projects (planning, started, in progress, or complete), transportation politics, and occasional grotesque parking craters in c/fuckcars.
For death posts, I bring them to my local communities sub. For me, that could be !newyork@lemmy.ml or !nyc@lemmy.ml where the friends and neighbors of the victims might be.
We know solutions like bike lanes, public transport or home office for suitable jobs. Problem is convincing politics that these solutions are necessary to build/implement. Currently tax/bribe money from car/oil companies is too juicy.
We currently have the biggest oil crisis of my life. Its only dampened by advances of green energy. Yet politics talk about making gas cheaper instead of implementing right for homeoffice which would reduce gas usage over night.
But noo lets all drive hours to work just to chat with AI and offshore colleagues from India. Good times.

People die and are injured in and around cars every day. The community should be about positive change and how to effect change in our own communities.
I wish there was /killedbyacar so I could mute it.
…and yet…for decades and decades…we see no substantiative actions from the very people who will most likely get killed by these csrs.

Well, no, urbanists have been begging for walkable spaces, cycle lanes, and useful transit for some time. Car users fight at every step of the way, refusing to understand that with fewer cars on the road, their trips get better.
As with all these kinds of issue on the fediverse, one or two people actually posting more of the content they want to see is generally enough to shift the balance
Be the change you want to see, the fix is more content not less

Yeah, people getting murdered by people in cars is probably going to convince people to keep driving, because we live in a disgusting society.

Show the good and the bad. People have known about the problem of car-centric infrastructure for decades …and…despite people being shown the good and bad stories about car-centric infrastructure for all thise years there has been no substantial action to change this infrastructure…
So at this poont we can confirm that most people dont sctually car about the problem of car-centric infrastructure so we had might as well show everything related to car-centric infrastructure - the whole truth and nothing but the truth. YES the positive changes and YES sad deaths/accidents. Why run away from the whole truth ? Why only tell half truths when the whole truth is staring at you im the face and killing people like you every day?
I like them, it’s nice to know that someone might get angry on my behalf, if I’m ever killed by a driver.
I had a close call two days ago, when riding down a bike lane, minding my own business. A car overtook, and started turning onto a side road, right into me. I didn’t have time to stop, and could only veer as far away from the car as possible, and thankfully the driver eventually noticed me and stopped the car. I was maybe 20 cm from being hit, and was only honked at.
The visibility was very good, I had been going straight for a while and didn’t just “appear out of nowhere”, I wasn’t going too fast or otherwise breaking laws or acting irresponsible, and I wasn’t wearing a cloak of invisibility. I had the right of way, and even if I had hit all my brakes the second the car started turning, I wouldn’t have had time to stop.
It got me looking for a different community about reducing car dependency. I didn’t find one though, so I’m back here. I’ll just see how it goes. Obviously one of the worst things about cars is that so many cyclists and pedestrians are killed by people driving them but I don’t know if people who already come to a community called Fuck Cars need constant reminders of it.

I think it’s an important reminder, but it doesn’t have to be daily. Maybe ask the mods to keep things to one day a week–Remembrance Thursdays or somesuch.

Instead of people getting killed by cars discussion should be about stuff like pocket pussys that fit in a tailpipe and how to safely rev an engine while mostly outside the car.

It’s not “nonsensical” it’s just putting more priority on (a kind of) convenience over safety than you would like. Nothing is 100% safe and people have a wide range of ideals and priorities. Heart disease is like 12x more deadly than road accidents but there’s no “Fuck Sedentary Lifestyles” community.
This is a hate community, not a logical conclusions one.
If it means more links to articles and less low effort image posts, I’m very welcoming of it.

I don’t mind them. It’s important to remember that the current situation is absolutely, needlessly, devastating for people every day. Humans are emotional creatures. Facts like “XYZ people die every day from cars” don’t hit the same way “look at this happy woman! She looks like your sister! And now she’s FUCKING DEAD from a car” move the needle.
Of course, there’s also the backfire effect where something makes someone uncomfortable, so they reject it. Humans are really bad at reasoning.
