from before they were called FPSs

Now I’m curious, what did we call them? I remember calling them shooters. Third-person wasn’t considered as an option (it would have made the game work harder and the hardware wasn’t there yet) so first-person was just kinda the default.

I’ve also heard “shoot-em-ups” and “wave shooters”, but I just called them shooters. I didn’t make a distinction between games where you had to move vs you being moved by the computer (e.g. those games in arcades where you only use the light gun) since I didn’t play the latter. Played a lot of DOOM, Duke, Blood, Quake, Hexen, and others. There was one called Rune that was based on the Unreal Engine, but I didn’t get far in it.

I believe Doom kind of defined the genre, to the point that subsequent games were called “doom clones” until we got to “FPS”. I know shoot-em-ups are more like the simpler 2D shooters that evolved from Space Invaders, but I guess “shooters” is a pretty good catch-all term.

      They were called Doom clones.

Saw an interesting YouTube video, What genre is Doom?, that poses the question what we would call Doom if it didn’t get labeled as an FPS. If I recall correctly the video ends up at role playing game or dungeon crawler because that is generally where Doom came from.

Idk, I don’t like the term myself, but I’ve always attributed it to explosions and rhyming with doom.

Metroidvania use game names, souls-like, souls-borne, roguelike/lite. They’re all partly game name based.

It’s not saying theyre “old”, modern games are boomer shooters too.

      Doom clones

Almost everything would be a clone of Doom if it was first person and had you shooting things. I think it took a while before that term was dropped. Can we drop “metroidvania” too?

I don’t think that post answers the question.

The reason for that Amazon link is because even though these games do indeed exist on GOG itself as they say, they are not on sale or anything there. This is a giveaway that must be redeemed through that Amazon page. You cannot redeem this giveaway directly on GOG alone. This community is all about posting links to giveaways. Posting a GOG link to the game would be irrelevant here.

I think I’m more curious how long you get to keep it through Luna. I can’t find a place to download the installer so I assume they will remove it randomly.

Games that are distributed just through Luna itself, I have no idea. But this giveaway is actually the Luna service providing you with a code to redeem the title on GOG. The end result is no different than buying the game directly on GOG. That is to say that Luna/Amazon cannot revoke the game from you at any point after you have redeemed it on GOG, but GOG hypothetically can. But the beauty of GOG’s DRM-free install files is that if you have downloaded the file, there is no way for GOG to restrict you from using it or anything.

Oh, well that’s pretty awesome! I saw it in the ‘claim’ are but didn’t realize it would also give a GOG key, thanks!

That’s why I put [GOG via Prime] in the title, they give away games on various different sites and I know most people prefer GOG to somewhere like Epic
