Washington (United States) (AFP) – The United States has denied Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas an entry visa to attend the UN General Assembly in New York next week, a source familiar with the case said Wednesday.
In a separate statement that did not mention Abbas by name, the State Department say it would deny visas to members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and officials with the Palestinian Authority (PA), “as a consequence of their failure to reform, contrary to their commitments to the United States, and their ongoing activities that undermine the prospects for peace.”
A source familiar with the matter confirmed to AFP that the Palestinian Authority president, Abbas, was covered by the measure.
The Trump administration took the same step last year, forcing the Palestinian leader, a regular at the UN General Assembly, to address the body of global leadership by video.
In its statement Wednesday, the State Department said that the PLO and PA had “once again, failed to live up to their commitments.”
“This includes initiating and supporting actions at international organizations that undermine and contradict prior commitments,” the department also said.
Washington also accused the organizations of “taking actions to internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict including through the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking to bypass negotiations through seeking unilateral recognition, and continuing to pay stipends to terrorists and to glorify acts of terrorism and terrorists in public pronouncements and school textbooks.”
The move puts the United States at odds with numerous countries, including France, that recognized a Palestinian state at the United Nations last year.
A total of 142 UN member states endorsed it following the conference on a two-state solution co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

Might be time to move the UNGA to another country.
I hope Israel gets nuked out of existence, and I won’t be surprised when the missiles start raining on my head in the US.
If that is what you hope for, you are truly doomed.
And people downvote you for saying that. Absolutely crazy people running around saying fucked up things, how dare you question them!
I hope for a fairer, cleaner and safer world. I hope people understand that only kindness will lead to a better future. Hate and violence will lead us to hell.
The problem is that revolutionary violence is a reaction to systemic violence. The people of Palestine have a right to violent resistance in the face of settler-colonial genocide. Palestinians can’t eat morals, the reaction against Israel is created by systemic Israeli violence.
Indeed. I completely understand the need for violence. All i mean is that if you fall into the trap of hating all israeli’s and wish violence on entire groups of people, nothing will change and you’re acting like a zionist.
Revolutionary change happens through violence, which is created by the conditions of colonial existence. There is no Israel without genocide of Palestine.
Of course. The Western alliance established Israel to further the goal of colonising the holy land. We must fight back against Imperialism.
If Palestinians and Israelis hate each other, there will never be peace. This hatred is being driven by the Israeli government backed by US money. I’d agree the Israeli state should be dissovled.
Hatred makes people dumb and easy to manipulate. We see it all the time. It’s hard to fight back against systems of oppression without hating the people that support them. Hate individuals sure. But hating people just for the group they belong to is exactly why the world is so fucked.
Which is fine and good. But what do we do with the hateful and violent people who are destroying the foundations of civilization for another 0 in their bank accounts? Or those doing it purely out of sick joy at watching others suffer?
I am of the opinion they need to be excised like rotten flesh from a wound to avoid the festering that we are seeing bubble up all over the world right now.
Compeletly agree. We must fight back against our oppressors but if we are consumed by hatred nothing will change. You can carve out rotting flesh while still being kind.
Fair point. Thanks for engaging.
