20mph speed limits are fine if done correcrly. Wales has done ot very badly, and its ignored and people speed everywhere.
I think 20mph limit in all side streets, and pedestrian heavy areas like cemtral london makes absolute sense. But main roads should stay at 30mph.
I dotn mind the wales idea of 20mph beong the default unless stated but that means actually.putting up lots of signs along main roads at 30mph.
And most road accidents and deaths are due to speeding. Changing the speed limit doesnt change that fact. I live on a long straight 20mph side street, and i frequently see people speeding down the road -40mph is common, and we definitley have people going ar 50 or 60 mph. So its not just about speed limits - its about enforcement, and road calming measures like speed bumps etc.
Its also about political will. They split my road with barriers and people who drove through the area campaigned to have it undone as it was inconvenient to them. The council relented just before a local election as they feared they might lose some seats. So now we’re back to speeding lunatics. Ive seen 4 car wrecks on my road in the 8 years ive lived there; and literally witnessed 2 of them. Its madness.
