And the worst part is how they refuse to listen to me. I’ll help people get off big tech. I’ll help them learn what the internet actually is and how web 3.0 is shit and ruined everything. But they won’t listen to me and just make fun of me. Their loss. I wish i had smarter friends.

As a call center worker whose job is mostly reading people our website and telling them what the words mean, stupidity is job security. AI is still years away from deciphering their illiteracy.

Yeah I’m being super Douchy as I am ranting 😆. I’m more just annoyed because people will not listen to me even though I (factually) know more than them and want to help them free themselves from their addiction to big tech and show them how great things could be. Yeah that sounds super jerky, but would I sound less douchey if I’m trying to explain to people why authoritarianism and fascism is wrong and they should quit listening to fox news propaganda? Its the same thing. I think we would all say that those of us not falling for fox new propaganda (and us not on X)are just smarter people. It sounds pompous but sorry, its true.

Nah, youre already smart because you know you dont know it all. The issue is people like my friend who thinks he’s going to go work in data centers because ai is totally the future (he’s an idiot that believes he’s a genius, and that ancap philosophy is foolproof, oh and he hates lgbtq people. He’s constantly on X, loves elon, and watches all the manosphere videos on YouTube).

Youre miles smarter than those people.

I ask myself this sometimes. He is just following the wrong path and really likes to be a contrarian on everything, so he gravitates to bad content. He is at least receptive to other viewpoints so its not a total lost cause. He has a deep seated mistrust of government but for some reason blind worship of corporations (see:atlas shrugged). Which I know is a paradox since they are one and the same.

when you say “refuse to listen to me” do you mean they don’t do what you tell them to do?

Ignore and make fun of me basically.

I’m not being an ass about it when I speak with them either. I’m just sick of being stuck on shitty platforms that dont respect us. My general messages every so often are “hey guys, could we change to a different platform because I’m trying to get off of fb as much as possible” etc. Or, “yeah I stopped using google products long ago and my life has improved so much. Google tracks every place you go and works with corporations to raise prices and target you specifically, making life worse for everyone. Firefox is awesome and I havent seen an add in a decade. You should try!”

I’m actively trying to improve their lives but they just dont do it. Or when I see a friend watching 3 YouTube ads to show me a 30 second video . like dude…can I please h3lo you escape some of this capitalistic hellhole by showing you newpipe or unlock?

You need their needs to be unmet to meet your needs… See how that doesn’t work?

People will work to resolve their issues with tech if they ever have them. You know things they don’t because at some point you wanted/needed to, but they don’t. They don’t care and have no reason to.

They should care because it controls every aspect of their life and their future, their job, their housing, whether police break in and murder them, etc. Being ignorant about it is very stupid when its so easy to learn.

The reason big tech controls the world and all governments is because people let them. Because they again have no idea the implication of the tech they use.

Its not having their needs unmet, that makes zero sense. They literally cannot survive without tiktok? Thats pathetic. They will keel over if they change messenger apps or navigation apps that dont support fascists?

They should, sure. But you’re going to waste your time and theirs and probably annoy the heck out of them. These services are popular for a reason. Switching from them is going to cost time, money, or quality of service in some way. If they don’t care, they’re not going to sacrifice any of these to gain nothing in their eyes.

People are social creatures, not logical ones. Your “attempts at convincing” are probably personal attacks. Hell, you’re personally attacking everyone who you even imagine disagreeing with you in this thread.

If I were to tell you to “Use Linux, you stupid shit!”, I would have made an effective advert against the use of Linux. This wouldn’t be a failure of the recipient, it would be my own as the communicator.

You might not understand, but ignoring such an “advice” is not ignorance, but healthy self-respect. Just imagine if your position was wrong and you didn’t realise: a disrespectful attitude would only showcase that you’re not just belligerent, but also an idiot.

Your rant is a perfect distillation of what you should change about yourself and why. To dumb it down for you: you’re keeping people away from good things. Thinking they deserve it doesn’t make you smarter, just more of an asshole.

I can see that. And I never act like that to anyone when discussing tech.

Example the other day among co workers , they mentioned how horrible windows is, so bad that they havent used their laptops in years and just use their phone because windows is so garbage. I explained how Much better my life has been using Linux only and they were amazed that someone who isnt a computer scientist could use Linux. That was a good time to explain how easy its become now and anyone can do it!

I just hate to see people driven to their spyware phones because windows has made the user experience horrible and hostile. One example.

I guess I dont get it becuase when someone more knowledgeable than me tells me something, I listen.

Funny but no. I’m usually very self deprecating but I dont really know anyone else that is tech literate and learns all the time as I do. They either have no desire to learn it or are just tired/lazy. I’m not even talking about my family that is 100% maga fox news 24/7, even my actual friends are just ignorant.

And yes, compared to a lot of super smart Lemmy folks with masters degrees I’m a total idiot. But I’m saying the IRL folks I know are faaaar stupider.

I think it’s okay to give friends advice because you think you know better. It’s also perfectly fine if they don’t share your views, whether out of laziness, inertia, or convenience, or because they’ve weighed the pros and cons for themselves and don’t agree with you. Ranting doesn’t accomplish anything productive. Trying to convert others and insisting on your own absolute truth doesn’t either. To others, it comes across as propaganda, and you just end up looking like an idiot.

Hence why i posted on “rant” dude 😅.

And I’m never the “ohmygod you need Linux how can you use windoze you dont even have control over your kernel dude”. I’m more like “hey, you know every single thing you say on fb messenger is monitored and used to track you and train ai to surveil you. Let’s use signal or something else, its really easy!” And no one listens. Or when I say to stop using x and tiktok for maaaaaaaany reasons. People are addicted and have zero idea the implications of their bad choices.

Computers and online life stopped being “nerd stuff” maybe what , 15 years ago? This is essential knowledge thats embedded in everyone’s life, work, leisure time, friends, everything.

People are driving an f1 car when all they’ve ever done is ridden a tricycle.

many people have not used computers much outside of their smatphone. I know them. Many others are not real good with non standard things. Heck I can’t get them to use password managers. Now granted they will. Maybe. Eventually. Many of them could not handle making facebook accounts or their own email (work ones were setup for them)
