[Lack of accessible sheltered and secured bicycle parking in a locked room] was having an onward impact on ownership likelihood, especially in areas already poorly served by public transit solutions. The determination of the researchers was that current housing stock is ‘ill-equipped’ for parking high-value electric bikes that would also require charging. The researchers suggest that, in many cases, on street storage boxes might be more feasible as the challenges of retrofitting older or more cramped buildings to meet transport trends is complicated.

The researchers outline to policymakers that in the future, the implementation of secure bicycle parking should become part of planning applications and a compulsory feature, much as EV charge ports are becoming a standardised infrastructure for cars.
