So, there probably won’t be a contest. Streeting seemed to be closest to having the necessary 81 MPs backing him (and even that wasn’t certain). Burnham was rumoured to have something like 300 MPs willing to nominate him and that really doesn’t leave much room for anyone else.
I thought Burnham already promised Chancellor to Shabana Mahmood.
Lots of rumours going around but nothing confirmed yet.
I really don’t think it will be her. She’s very unpopular with the members, has no economic background and has very little treasury experience (briefly a shadow junior treasury minister, but that’s it). There are half a dozen or so choices that would be obviously better.
