Tenants of a midtown Toronto apartment building are frustrated, saying they have been without heat since the start of April.

A broken boiler is to blame, the building owner says, and it’s the second time in three years that tenants at 64 St. Clair Avenue W., near Yonge Street, have been left in the cold.

In February 2023, tenants were without heat for at least a week and the problem was solved only after Coun. Josh Matlow, who represents the area, advocated to get the heat back on.

This time, tenants say the building owner, Cherishome Living, has told them that the problem is being worked on. A new boiler is expected at the end of May.

“It’s really frustrating for sure,” Andrea Thompson, a tenant, said Monday. “I’m tired because it’s just cold.”

Thompson said people are wearing layers to stay warm. Space heaters have been made available to tenants until the problem is fixed, but Thompson worries about who will pay to run them.
