Salo is super overrated in the cult film scene, in my opinion. I remember being stoked to see it, and then really disappointed by the end. That may suggest a lot more about me than it does the movie.

    1. If you’re watching it hoping to be shocked, I can think of some better choices. I rewatched Irreversible recently, and that one still makes my palms sweat 23 years later.
    2. If you’re watching it hoping for some deeper message about authoritarianism and the bourgeoisie, I can’t help you there, that’s not really my scene. What I can say is Salo ain’t it.

hey i’ll give it a watch, nice to see someone else actually offering spontaneous media recommendations on here ;)

that is my scene. very much so. I don’t really react that way to gore or jumpscare torture movies / guy dying in the wilderness of preventable injuries /etc lol, that’s why I was shocked. and, I mean, there was a lot of gore being shoved in my face in middle school, so I went years before the ukraine war without allowing myself to see anyone die. outside of police videos, and other things where we have a duty akin to a jury to review the footage as evidence. collateral murder. stuff like that. if you’re just watching someone get killed for entertainment, in my opinion you become a minor accomplice. I am un-desensitized to the extreme, but seeing a guy get decapitated didn’t make me feel decapitated. i didn’t retch seeing azovites boil a guy’s head.

it’s the atmosphere which made me present enough to go hurl. it’s the clarity with which it reveals the unseen facets of bourgeois domination we can intuit are there. maybe if I was more imaginative, or more sick, I could summon what the movie does in my mind’s eye. i’m just the type to look away, and the movie doesn’t allow that.

Word, I could see that. I suppose I’m just not sensitive to that context myself.
