This is already quite old news.
It’s not clear that the Russians planning this operation understood that a very hefty part of air cargo is transported on common passenger flights, whenever there’s extra capacity left after the passengers and their luggage have been loaded.
Of course Putin is very often very disconnected from the reality, but it feels unlikely he’d think anything positive to the Russia would come out of bombing several civilian airplanes above the Atlantic. It is much more likely that they were planning to “only” bomb cargo planes. An article I read about this some months ago claimed that the Biden administration had phoned Kremlin, saying that “dudes, you’re very likely to end up hitting a passenger plane. You need to abort that mission immediately!”
But yeah, there are these kind of terror attacks taking place all the time. We should understand that they are centrally coördinated, intentional and very planned.
Oh… I didn’t even realize this was the same as that DHL bombing plot from whenever ago. Is this maybe just a bad source? They dated it recently, but I can’t read the FT article about it so I can’t even see the date.
But yes. It’s weird that killing Ukrainians by the train car load is fine but blowing up European air travel would all of a sudden be a big deal (although I do agree with you that it would be). Zelensky and others are saying that Putin wants to fight Europe, and presumably they would know, but that seems so clearly suicidal that it does seem like they would back off from it. But like you say, who knows with the level of disconnect in their decision making.
Based on this part, it looks very strongly like the same incident:
The key element of the scheme was the explosions at DHL logistics centers in Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The parcels with magnesium fuses were sent from Lithuania.
European services found out that this was only the first stage. The next step was to blow up airplanes on routes to the United States, which would have caused mass casualties and global shock.
I’d say that if this was about a separate incident, the reporter would use some phrase such as “again” in the phrasing.
