The other night, I watched a double feature of Mann’s Miami Vice and Semi-Pro. Both introductions absolutely blew me away. With Vice, you have no idea what the fuck is going on and it’s like you’re dumped into season 3 of a show you’ve never seen before, mid arc. Frame one, just BOOM, here’s Jay-Z/Linkin Park, we’re going to arrest a pimp, no wait our CI just killed himself in traffic, now Jamie Foxx is flying a plane to make a drug deal with a dude who knows he’s a cop. I fucking loved it. But then after the first act, someone was clearly saying, hey we need an actual plot here. By the time you get to the last 30 minutes, it becomes a standard action movie. I was much more captivated by the initial “what-the-fuck-is-going-on” energy of the beginning of the movie.

Meanwhile, Semi-Pro starts off with this absolute banger of a 70s R&B song that’s hilarious and some great commentary by Will Arnett and Andy Daly. But just like with Miami Vice, the plot rolls in about trying to get this fictional team into the NBA and it’s nothing memorable. It was bizarre how well they paralleled each other despite being completely different genres.

So, movie intros you love and then the movie just kinda fizzle out?
