I was out camping with friends, not too far from a road with a gas station. I needed to pee, and fancied a real indoor toilet as opposed to having to somehow hide from my friends somewhere in our flat field. I grab my earphones and a jacket and use Google maps to go to the gas station. On the way there, I listen to music with my earphones. For the sake of brevity, I arrive at the gas station, pause my music and remove my earphones and enter the bathroom. I do my business and start to leave.
On my way out of the bathroom, I put my earphones back in, and instead of music I heard a woman’s voice. I figured a YouTube video had started randomly playing as my phone does that sometimes. But no, YouTube isn’t open and my Spotify is paused. I stop and listen to her voice for a moment. She said something like
👱🏼♀️: I’m just worried about her. She isn’t answering her calls. She won’t answer her phone
Then I hear a man reply and say
🧔🏻♂️: Shes just having fun with her friends. I promise she’s alright, okay?
It occurred to me that my earphones might’ve somehow tuned into a radio station or something, but that made little sense and the dialogue didn’t match. I continue listening as I leave the bathroom, and the man and woman continue to talk about this third person who I figured was their daughter. I buy some snacks and leave the store, still listening. Then, I see a car parked up in front of the gas station store, with a man and a woman. Their mouth movements matched the dialogue. This sounds awful but when I realised this I went back to the store and sat at a table where I could see them through a window and just listened in awe and confusion.
Through eavesdropping, I learned their daughter had gone to a sleepover at a friend’s house. She was a young woman (21), yet older than me, and she’d never stopped overnight at a person’s house apparently, so her mom was worried about the potential dangers. I listen for five more minutes, when the woman says something that seriously made my heart skip a beat. She said something similar to
👱🏼♀️: that boy in the window has coffee. you should get some. I will.
They both looked at me and I almost had to go to the toilet again. It was like being caught. Eventually they just carried on talking to each other as I sat there panting. They drifted around talking about other things too, and I sat there for about ten more minutes before the ‘transmission’ just stoped completely. I could see through the store window that their mouths were still moving but I could no longer hear them. All through listening to them I was in complete awe, and when it ceased I just left the store and walked back to the camp, trying to figure it out. I decided not to tell my friends. This was a week ago and I still have no idea.
