Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So how’s it going?
Getting a new bed today.
The old one tore between the pocket springs, it was about 12 years old, I got a really sore back sleeping on it one night. Had to sleep at the foot end whilst waiting for the new one to turn up…it has been 3 weeks. Looking forward to a good nights sleep tonight.
Beds are so important
I know, the hole kept getting worse till we bit the bullet. We got really lucky also, the day we decided that a new bed was required…Farmers were having a 50% off bed sale…so epic win
I replaced my bed a few years ago with a japanese futon. I really like it.
Congrats on the new bed! Hope it’s exactly what you’re after
Kia ora. Nō Australia ahau, engari he tauira hōu ō te reo Māori ahau. Kei te pēhea koutou?
Kia ora! Nō Taranaki au, engari e noho ana au ki Wellington.
I ako au te reo Māori mo e rua nga tau, engari kaore au i te pai tonu.
Kia ora, e Rewi (I’ve read that means Dave!) Kei te pēhea koe? Kua ako au ki te reo mō anake toru marama. Kāore tōku reo i te pai hoki!
Ka rawe! Kei te pai au. Kei te ngenge au pea.
(I’ve read that means Dave!)
So, one thing I’ve learnt it that everyone has a different opinion about everything. Oddly, the more te reo I learnt the less comfortable I was using it (as an example, when you first start learning you learn a pepeha, ko X toku maunga, ko X toku awa, etc. But the more I learnt the less comfortable I was in using this format and instead learnt other formats that avoided these kids of phrases).
So where I’m going with this is that, in my opinion, you shouldn’t translate names. Your name is your name. If there’s someone called Tama, when you are speaking English their name is still Tama. Therefore, I don’t think you should translate Dave to Rewi. If you were learning te reo in a classroom, with enough teachers you would definitely find a difference of opinion on this! So much so that I considered not posting this, but it’s written out now so I might as well post it.
I’m sorry about that, Dave. I didn’t know that. I used this teaching app called Tipu at one point and it had said the translation for Dave was Rewi. I assumed it was only because of the different alphabets. I won’t do that anymore. I hope it didn’t annoy you too much.
I wasn’t offended! Just thought I’d mention my thoughts on it.
While the Māori alphabet has less letters, it’s pretty common in any language to just say words in their original language when it makes sense. For example, while most languages will have a term for New Zealand, when someone speaks e.g. French, they will probably just say “Auckland” when talking about Auckland.
I hope I haven’t come across like I’m lecturing. I’m by no means an expert, my comments are intended as discussion points not as the final word on the matter.
I wholeheartedly agree! Thanks for starting these threads! They should be lots of fun. Of course you didn’t come across as lecturing.
I’ll get back to you on that, I’m only a few chapters into Bruce Biggs ‘Let’s Learn Maori’
Cool! I’m using “Māori Made Easy” by Scotty Morrison. It’s very good.

He’s a multi-talented guy, that Scott Morrison.
Anyone have any recommendations for some USB C Hubs/Docks ?
Was previously using an HP G5 until it decided to die, and was wondering if I should get another of the same, or if there was something better out there. (I use HP/Dell Laptops, partner uses HP/Macbooks)
I have been using a Dell one at home for ages, it seems to work well. I have used it with my Linux Mint laptop, my partners Chromebook and my Galaxy phone.
Pretty sure this is the one
Interesting. Not too sure if it’s a bug on my end, but when I click the link, it sends me back to this comment. However, when I inspect the element, it correctly shows the PBTech link?
Anyhows, I remember having one of those (or something very similar for work) but had forgotten about them. Thanks for reminding me to look into these ones too :)
Weird.
Going to the edit interface shows the correct link…must be a bug.
It’s an error in the link code. You have:
[one]() [](https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBDDEL1714/Dell-D3100-USB-30-Single-4K-Docking-Station-DP-x1)
But a link format is
[text](url)
. You’ve got the text with a blank URL, then a second link with blank text with the url.It should be:
[one](https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBDDEL1714/Dell-D3100-USB-30-Single-4K-Docking-Station-DP-x1)

Battling with WINZ today. Dropped off a uni application yesterday. Got an email that I needed to come in for an appointment the day before my course starts. Last semester they called me and it was sorted. Tried calling them, the first two times I was told the wait line is 109 minutes long and I was hung up on. The other times I was told they are at capacity and to call back later. Why they don’t have a call back system is beyond me so now I am in the office waiting… 0/10 don’t get health problems.
Had pretty good day, I cut grass for a living and I’m really getting a bit sick of all the mud and I think everyone else is getting a bit over it as well… still had a good time though, my 5y.o. boy had a girl sleep over last night and it was adorable, destroyed his bedroom this morning though 😂
Just enjoying a nice peaceful evening on Lemmy with a cup of tea ✌️
