I attend Divine Liturgy (the mass) at a small Serbian Orthodox parish. It’s really small, it’s in a small building with office rooms. The church is in the largest room of the building, probably a room meant to hold reunions.
I was talking with the other parishioners outside the room after Sunday Divine Liturgy a couple years ago, after the priest had already put away his vestments and the sacred objects. One guy heard the sound of the thurible (censer) being swung and mentioned it during conversation. Orthodox thuribles have small bells attached. We all heard it as well. Curiosity took over me and I entered the room to see what he was doing. He was hearing confession from a parishioner. The thurible was nowhere to be seen and the room didn’t smell like incense. I exited the place as a matter of respect and waited for the priest to finish hearing the confession in order to talk to him. I asked him if he used the thurible after the Divine Liturgy and he said he didn’t, he just put stuff away and We all heard the bells jingling, it wasn’t just me, I wasn’t even the one who first mentioned it. I’m not one of those religious guys who call everything a miracle, actually I’m a very skeptical person in general, and I don’t think it was one, but I still can’t think of a reasonable explanation for what happened that day.
