In @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net, we provide a set of search engine choices. It differs a bit from country to country, but generally we have a nice set of search engines to choose from.
I would advice that you select one of the smaller search engines. They are generally better when it comes to privacy and you are supporting an alternative to Big Tech, although most of them get their search feeds from either Google or Microsoft at this time. That also means that switching from Google or Bing will allow you to get similar search results, while stepping away from Big Tech, so the switching cost should be lower.
So what is your favorite search engine?

Favorite to use: DuckDuckGo.
Favorite that almost certainly shouldn’t be in the default list: https://clew.se/@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net I really like Ecosia. I find that the results are still good and I feel good about supporting a company that is trying to make a positive change for the environment.
@jon@vivaldi.net I know it’s paid so maybe that makes it a bit of problem. But I switched to @kagihq@mastodon.social and honestly haven’t looked back.
Enjoy!

@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net Searching directly on wikipedia is surprisingly effective at getting at information – as opposed to content farms cashing in from showing ads.
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net
There is a reason why we include Wikipedia as well. It is good for many things. So is adding vertical search engines, which is easy to do in Vivaldi. You can then access them all quickly through the search engine shortcuts.
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net Thank you. Another one would be to search directly into the wayback machine of the webarchive.
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net
You can add that as well. You have to add it manually, but I tested it and it works well.
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz @jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net I do this when I want to know about someone or something named, which is a big chunk of what would otherwise be general web searches. I go directly to the Wikipedia app on my phone, and it’s a far better scanning / reading experience most of the time.
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net Startpage for primary (better Mandarin search result) and secondary DuckduckGo
@jon@vivaldi.net I voted for Ecosia because that’s what I had been on for several years now but recent weeks I have been using Kagi as someone here gave me access to Kagi membership (Thanksgiving offer) and i tell you what its growing on me. When I was on Ecosia I use to occasionally search Google through incognito to get the result i was looking for but I no longer feel the need! Kagi is good, really good!
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net I have three favorites, but Google and Bing are NOT among them!
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net Kagi. No ads, no spam and spot on results (and offers real useful filtering tools when needed).
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net The independent search index of brave is my favourite, Mojeek and metager notable other search engines.
Unfortunately searx instances seem to be regularly blocked by the index providers.@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net I second Kagi!
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net @jon@vivaldi.net - The “spinoff” is cooler (perhaps?)

RE: whatever, their crypto angle, but … i like the results, plus an easy
“Share” (results) button!
😅
Seriously though. I’ve had a good couple of years using it so far (search results, that is).@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net I’d love to see a default option for @kagihq@mastodon.social. It’s been my search engine of choice for a year and is worth the $.
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net If you consider the overwhelming majority of people who use Google search, this result unfortunately also shows what a small bubble we are in here.
@UserMicha@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net
Not a bubble, just a nice place. We must invite more people to join us.
@jon@vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net I voted #DuckDuckGo because it’s the one I use but it’s not ideal, they’ve added ads and “AI” recently and you can’t remove a word from search (using “-” which works on google or at least used to).
Might try Ecosia next but is it really environmentally-friendly? It does look like green washing a bit…#SearchEngines
