I really really loved Midnight Mass, Rahul Kohli’s accent notwithstanding just let my mans be British, as someone from a non religious background I find religious horror to be extremely interesting as it is all so foreign to me. Blind faith and devotion, divinity and the occult and not knowing what’s real and what’s a delusion, the moral superiority and hypocrisy of people claiming to be godfearing and the horrors they commit under the banner of religion, the entire concept of ostracisation within these insular communities etc. I remember seeing clips of Jesus Camp when I was a kid and being way more freaked out than any actual horror film I’d seen.
Midnight Mass also has these characters that are so enjoyable, I would say lovable but Bev Keane I was praying on your downfall, and their small town relationships and long history together really hit me hard when they all gathered together to die. Hamish Linklater was mesmerising as well, his sermons and therapy sessions were so earnest and the dedication he has to his community and later on his desperation and guilt GOD it was so good.
I have seen The Witch and Hagazussa and Frailty which I also absolutely loved, and I’ve watched a lot of folk horror such as Apostle, The Ritual, The Wailing etc which is my favourite subgenre. I’m wondering what other things people recommend to capture a similar vibe?
