I watched this back when it first came on streaming and at the time thought it was fun and so-so when it came to scares. Tonight I decided to watch it again because it’s been a while and I’m interested in the sequel. I don’t think I gave it enough credit the first time. It’s genuinely unnerving. Yes, it does take advantage of some of the old tropes, but it does so in a really smart way. I really enjoyed watching the slow breakdown of the main character and had even forgotten that she ultimately does not succeed. Smile is a really well done movie. Great soundtrack, interesting concept, and even some decent jump scares. I remember being impressed by the freaky marketing they did with people doing the crazy smile at sporting events and such, so I’m looking forward to the sequel and I hope it lives up to the original.
