tldr; suggest projects that could help me land an AI job in the field of biophysics or immunology.
Hey! I think I have a somewhat rare case. I’ve studied AI for 5–6 years now, and have a BSc and MSc in this field. My main interest now is to use this for immunology, such as employing generative AI to help design antibodies, or help study what chemical reactions contribute to making a cell “alive”. Just two examples, but I’m really interested in life at the nano-scale, and if it can be applied to save lives, I’m even more interested.
However, since these topics are not really AI-related, I’ve only managed to add a single course to my degree related to cell biology and immunology. Regarding the final projects for my degrees, I could not find topics related to this easily within my universities (trust me, I tried). I did however follow books independently on some of the subjects, such as Janeway’s Immunobiology, and studied a lot of low-level cell interactions (including defence mechanisms) in the brain during my studies.
I am now in the position of not really being hireable in what I want to do because I do not have any visible experience. Most of the research groups/companies that look to employ want someone with a degree in biology or chemistry (even if the job is related to AI). Therefore, whenever I send my details over to the head of a group/contact person, I never receive a reply back.
What am I doing wrong? Are there any ways to get some visible experience that could help with the job-hunting process? Or am I doomed, and I need to start another Master’s degree in biophysics? 😅
Regarding the visible experience, could you suggest a project I could perform that would make my resume interesting to potential employers? What pieces of software are often used in this field that I could get accustomed to? I think I’ll be out of a job for a while, so I could have a few months to work on something interesting while applying to new positions.
