Was recently on a job where the jman had us bond to building steel by mounting our octagon boxes with self tappers to the purlin (for the lights we were hanging) instead of having to pull a ground wire into every box. The building steel was bonded to a ground rod driven into the ground, so that was assumed to be sufficient, but the panel where the lights would be receiving their power was not bonded to any ground rod. The panel did have the neutral bonded to the ground bar and I’m assuming the panel was ultimately mounted to the building steel (wasn’t able to check).
Edit: we did end up tying in a ground sting to the self tapped mounting screw which was then made up with the ground wire coming from the light fixture
Is this a suitable grounding method?
