Shows you how transphobic my country really is. Don’t get me wrong, the Iranian system seems to be impractical as well, but I’ll still say it’s better there than here.
Iran is not just the only Muslim-majority country to peform GRS, there is Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Indonesia.
Very interesting. What was the response from Redditors?
Somewhere else on reddit I’ve seen the response of “aykshully it’s not trans rights but anti gay conversion therapy and genital mutilation”
They were mostly curious and asking follow-up questions.
Wild. Very interesting read though. I’m ashamed to admit that I’d say it wouldn’t be possible in Iran if I were asked. But here we are. Good to see it is.
I’m impressed that there’s such a comprehensive process. I’m a little worried by the fact that this means Iran could have a registry of nearly every trans person in their country, but maybe they’re practicing good data retention policies and the records get regularly destroyed.
In the 1980s, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa that allowed sex reassignment surgery for those diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The fatwa essentially religiously separated transgender issues from homosexuality, legitimizing transgender identities and providing a religious endorsement for medical interventions. But homosexuality is still harshly persecuted in Iran. The fatwa as far as I know is pretty progressive, cuz it recognized gender dysphoria as a mental condition and SRS/HRT as a treatment. And it addressed ethical concerns such as leaving individuals suffering with gender dysphoria without any viable treatment. It was a religiously sanctioned and compassionate solution to a significant personal and social issue, allowing it to be passed within the framework of Islamic law. A lot of people also say that gay people commonly end up transitioning in Iran as it is the only legal way to be with someone they are attracted to, but idk how true it is. But yeah transgender rights in Iran is an anomaly for sure and very interesting/complicated.
Could you post a good source on this 1987 fatwa? Couldn’t find any that went into much detail about it other than to complain about how Iran is transphobic (pretty ironic coming from the likes of the BBC).
The Netherlands as a country is a Larp. The only way its succeeds is by either waiting so long to adopt the new thing they get it without any of the growing pains. Or waiting so long that by the time they get the new thing it turned out to be a ruse and they got the best experience in the old way.
