Unfortunately this joke doesn’t work in Japanese.
Kyoto: 京都 (pronounced: Kyouto) (lit: Capital City)
Tokyo: 東京 (pronounced: Toukyou) (lit: East Capital)
So while the “kyou” in Kyoto/Tokyo is the same, the spelling and pronunciation of the “to” is different.
In China there is also Beijing (北京), the North Capital, and Nanjing (南京), the South Capital. The East Capital refers to Tokyo (东京)
Sadly the West Capital is called 西安 and not 西京.
Well considering Tokyo was originally called Edo and Kyoto is still it’s own separate city…
