I haven’t read much about chinese revolution, so i became intrigued, the cultural revolution was really like that or it was exaggerated?

well, the post became more about the cultural revolution than the scifi piece itself.
It does factor in the book; her experience in the CR (including her father’s death by Red Guard) completely sours Ye Wenjie on humanity and causes her to invite the aliens to earth. Plot-wise it also places her in the radar base when she wouldn’t have been there otherwise.
