This reminds me of this blog post about why we need the humanities https://acoup.blog/2020/07/03/collections-the-practical-case-on-why-we-need-the-humanities/
I’m a scientist and I’m generally dismayed by the direction of higher education and academia. Apparently it wasn’t always like this, but it’s hard to distinguish between problems that have existed for the last few decades and more deeply embedded problems
Edit: oh! I’ve just noticed that the author of OP’s article is the same author as the blog post I linked, Bret Devereaux. That’s funny
I’m not 100% sure this is a free link so if you can’t see it let me know and I’ll try to work something out.
It might be because I block a bunch of stuff, but is all I see:
The United States is rapidly shedding historians—and the national security implications are dire. Even as it grapples with challenges and conflicts rooted in complicated regional histories, the United States continues a decade-and-a-half-long path of defunding history departments and deprioritizing history education. This threatens to produce a generation of policymakers and advisors whose view of the world is increasingly, and dangerously, shallow.
After that, it is just the author credit and end-page layout (and side bars and the like).
It might be your blocker, I’m not sure. Some testing on my local indicates that the
?tpcc=recirc_latest062921
at the end of the URL makes the difference, maybe some kind of gift link? If you use or can use Firefox, you can also load the page, put it into reader mode, and then refresh, and you should be able to read it that way. None of the other tools I know of to share links like this seem to work unfortunately.Thank you! Reader View does the trick!
I seem to be able to access it just fine.
