    @georgetakei@universeodon.com in England, none of these things will get you jail for a first offence (only if you repeatedly commit these crimes)

    @georgetakei@universeodon.com

    So thievery, lying, and breaking into other people’s property.

    Who knew that any of these might land you in jail?

    (Are people this stupid and/or morally bankrupt?)

    @georgetakei@universeodon.com Well that was clickbait and a half if I’ve ever seen it. I don’t think there is a person alive who thinks any of those things is in some way not illegal. I’ll admit I wouldn’t have assumed the password thing would land one in jail, but it’s also pretty obviously not legal too and definitely something that would get one into trouble. Obviously. The other two are pretty much self explanatory as things that can land one in prison…

    @georgetakei@universeodon.com but suppose you do these things but confess to the crimes on the front lawn of court house in public before going in. I’ve seen plenty of examples where people are allowed to get away with a lot worse than any of these.

    @georgetakei@universeodon.com I knew someone who was on social services, a single mom with one kid whose ex had abandoned them. I don’t think she ever lied on any of those forms, but I could understand the temptation. If she had $50 left at the end of the month she had to spend it before she filled out the paperwork. If you reported that $50 they took $50 off of food stamps, and $50 off the rental assistance, and $50 off the heating assistance, and she and the kid would go hungry to the tune of a hundred bucks the next month! (Republican US state!)
