I’m talking about those that play the same games 2 or more times. You already know how the game plays and you know how the story goes. Wouldn’t you rather spend that time playing a new game? I’ve only got so much time to play and a I have huge backlog. I never found myself picking an game I’ve played already over a new one. I’d like to know your thoughts.
Looking at the way you wrote that, it seems like you look at games as though they were work. That doesn’t sound too healthy to me.
I often find my time being rather limited when deciding if and what game to play. I’m not usually a person to replay a game I am already through with, but older games tend to be a bit on the shorter side, with rpgs such as the old Final Fantasies, which ‘only’ take around 70~ish hours to beat.
That’s still a lot, but at least I know what I’m getting into. Newer titles are often more meaningless, padded out sections, full of side quests that not only won’t contribute anything to the story but are also just boring me out of my mind.
Prime example would be the Trails of-Games. You can put hundreds of hours into these and not get anywhere.
In short: older games (depending on what era we’re talking about) mostly offer concise, succinct experiences that you can drop in and out of, whereas newer games à la ‘open world-survival-crafting’ are made by greedy companies to whom the game end product doesn’t matter.
Yes, I know not all of them are like that but I won’t write up a book on reddit - I count on the reader to use their own brains.
It’s not like I don’t enjoy games. I really do. But I would feel like I’m missing out on many other great games if I spent that time replaying something. If I had all the time in the world, I probably would but I don’t. I don’t have much time these days and can only get in a few hours a day. For me, I prioritize new experiences over old ones. But I like seeing other people’s perspectives on this matter. I think I’m starting to understand even if I can’t relate.
