Venting but also asking. (PC is a lvl 6 fighter)
I play at a table I usually thoroughly enjoy. BUT, the table is constantly talking out-of-game either arguing with the DM or formulating plans for the current scenario.
It’s not uncommon for these discussions to take 15-20 minutes before we actually do anything. Things as simple as how to open a door. (Not a joke)
I decided after a few frustrating sessions that if they were going to stand around and do nothing, I was going to make my character just do things to move the plot along.
Almost every single time I announce my player is going to do something or go somewhere slightly ahead of the group, he is immediately ambushed/charmed/trapped/surrounded/etc. If I decide to just open the door, instantly hit with multiple arrows and spells.
The DM jokingly comments about how often my PC is in trouble by himself but I literally don’t know what else to do in game other than just stand there and wait.
At this point I don’t even care if my PC dies, I am literally just using him to move the game along.
I’ve mentioned keeping the discussions in game a few times now but nothing seems to change. Am I resigned to this fate?
Sounds like the group has good reason to spend 30 minutes trying to figure out how to open a door if most of them are trapped! Your DM must like that sort of game, and the players are just trying to survive his antics. I’ve been in those type of games before, it’s 20 minutes of fun packed into a 4 hour session.
