I bought a Highlander in November of 2022.
Lie 1: After I paid, the dealership informed me a second key wasn’t available , but I would get it “in 2-3 months.”
Lie 2: In October I called Toyota corporate customer service (not the dealership) and they told me I “should get a letter later this year”.
Lie 3: I called Toyota again and tried to nail down a more specific date and the person said “the letter will arrive later this month”. (Still October)
Lie 4: October goes by, still no letter. So in early November, I called Toyota again and they said I’d get a letter “later this month”. I told him that’s exactly what the last guy told me, and asked him to escalate my case.
Lie 5: I got a voicemail from the escalation person apologizing, and telling me that I was scheduled to get a letter “later this month”.
I called that number back and said I needed something more specific than “later this month” or “later this year”. He put me on hold for a while, came back and said ”Oh, your vehicle was supposed to be in phase 2. You should have gotten a letter months ago, but it looks like for some reason we didn’t send it to you.”
Seriously? What would have happened if I hadn’t called them repeatedly??
Toyota customer service is embarrassingly bad.
I filed a complaint with dmv after the dealership lied to me and wouldn’t refund my $20k. It was like pulling teeth and left me angry for months.
Same boat as you, been waiting for a key since April for my Tundra. I’ve been given different phase numbers every time I’ve talked to someone. Pretty much gave up at this point.
technically, its just one lie multiple times

I bought a 4runner Dec 2022 got one key. I finally received the letter to go to a dealer to get the second key around August. Still haven’t went to dealer yet. If you have toyota app it shows under service campaigns.
We just got our second key after a year
Call your local dealership and have your vehicle’s VIN ready. Your dealership will take your VIN down and order a key for you. It’ll take some time for Toyota Corporate to dispatch a key to the dealership after they place the order, so I’d probably check back with the dealer in 3 to 5 business days. After they have the key, you will need to schedule an appointment with the dealer to have the vehicle programmed to recognize the new key.
If for some reason your dealership gives you the runaround about your key, call the Toyota Brand Engagement Center regarding recall “23TJ01” and explain the situation again. Toyota occasionally will “goodwill” a key to the customer if for some reason the dealership can’t order a key for them.
I think it could be the attitude that is causing the problem
DUDE!similar thing with me I bought my rav 4 a year ago and was told they have no second keys in stock. Called multiple times kept getting the run around. Finally nearly a year later get a letter to come get the second key. Really infuriating after spending so much money on a car. I feel like they have gone downhill
I m in the same boat. Brought a new Tundra almost a year ago and no second key. I stop in monthly and inquire where my key is. Frustrating.
23 Lexus in May - just got my 2nd key last week
I bought a Camry the last week of Nov 2022 and also only received one key. Was told a few months and that Toyota corporate would mail me the key automatically by the dealer. I figured that wasn’t the case but nbd, I can manage to get a key down the road.
I took it into a new dealership for its 6 month Toyota care, and asked the service rep about the second key that should have been ready to get by now. He told me that he saw the recall and my car was in phase 2 so should be ready in August. I called in September to schedule an appointment with service about the key recall, they had scheduled me out a week to wait for a blank fob to be mailed to them, then day of it was less than an hour to have them program the new key.
TLDR: Call service and schedule an appointment for the missing key recall. No letter needed as I never even received one myself amongst a move.
It’s all a joke the sooner we realize that your local dealer and corporate doesn’t give a shit about you the sooner we can win
Of course the lack of the 2nd key is due to the micro chip shortages still going on since Covid and China lockdowns (amazing it’s still an issue). I waited about 3 months when I got my new Tacoma lease.
Of course Toyota lacks ability to control this but likely reacting based on priority and who’s telling the loudest. Keep inquiring and I think you’ll get your 2nd key
Personally this should not be an issue since Nov 2022
I must be missing something. Why is the letter important?
Ahhh a dealer not giving the customer their 2nd key… a tale as old as time.
They used it to program another key for some one else’s car OP
