I swapped my 2TB NVMe over to my new OLED LE. I started on my old Deck, since it had been a while. Old deck came apart very easily. The new Deck, not so much! What a frustrating experience. I had to stop and triple check I didn’t forget a screw and even went online in search of tear down videos (without any success).

I used plastic pics to wedge open the case. On the old deck, I started by the trigger which easily opens up a seam that you can follow around the unit.

On my LE, the plastic seems to be softer. And the latches much stronger. I was not able to pry it apart using the same method and had to start elsewhere. It simply didn’t want to come apart. It resulted in some slight marring on the seams where the front and back panels meet.

No one would ever know it’s there, but I see it and it sucks. I was very careful. This is in no way Steam’s fault, I’m just passing this along so that others can learn from my mistake.

It’s the fault of the LE only. It uses polycarbonate and not ABS iirc

I used the same process and didn’t have any issues. Sorry that happened! I know how annoying those little issues can be that nobody else knows is an issue.

Use a guitar pick at the edge near the trigger buttons. Should pop pretty easy if you wiggle it (and get all the screws).

I think a bigger thing to take care of is the ribbon cable that runs over the plate above the battery connector and drive, as well as the other small cable which has a tether to the same plate. Original SD didn’t have those.

Dude! Are your nails made out of Adamantium?! :)

I have two picks - A soft yellow one, which is slightly thinner and a thicker blue one. The switch was too “stuck together” for the yellow and kept bending it, and too weak for the blue one… I had to improvise and use a mixture of the two. I didn’t realize I was marring the plastic in the process though. :(

Do you have the LE? I suspect nails might work on my old SD, but the new one (possibly just the LE from the comments I’ve read) is night and day tougher to open… at least mine is :(
