Hey guys, I just had a question about your experience with mechanics upcharging you.

Thursday I am supposed to pick up my car, after gearbox service. Upon making diagnostics the mechanic told me it will cost me about 1200-1500 euros. I figured that it is a good price and left my car there for repairs. We did not sign anything, just mutual agreement.

Now, after 3 weeks of waiting, he gave me a call telling that car will be ready thursday and the total cost is 2500 euros. I asked him why did he not tell me in advance about additional costs, but he didn’t have a reply. He just told me, I fixed your car, like I would have done it for myself, changed some parts that I would have changed if I would be doing this for my car.

What would you do in my situation? This is not the first time, I use his services, but this is the first time, when he is asking for so much more money without giving me a heads up. I appreciate his work, telling me he has invested more and etc. But I don’t know if I would have fixed it if I knew it would cost 2500 euros.

Ask for proof of everything done and check local laws work should not be carried out without owners permission. Extra stuff should be explained to you before even ordering the parts.
