I just got my OLED 512gb steam deck today but I’m having some issues. I ordered a WD black 2tb sn770m nvme drive for it.

First issue: from the original 512gb SSD I couldn’t connect to a WiFi network (2.4ghz or 5ghz) during setup no matter what I tried.

Second issue: I swapped out the 512gb original SSD for the WD 2tb SSD. The new WD drive was not visible from the boot menu. I still tried to boot into steam recovery from a USB and sd card (using Rufus). Finally got to the recovery OS and selected the “reimage steam deck” option. I was then greeted by the “/dev/nvme0n1 does not exist – no nvme drive detected” error.

I can’t get on WiFi on the provided SSD and I can’t get the new WD drive to boot so that I can reimage steamOS. What am I doing wrong here? I’m so frustrated

You’re sure you installed it correctly? It’s hard to get the screw in if it’s not pushed in all the way, but you got the ESD shield on and everything?

Pretty sure. I’ve attempted to install both the original and the new nvme multiple times now. Never any issues with the deck recognizing the original nvme. Only the new WD one.

I put the shield on whichever drive is installed at the time. The screw seems to fit just the same to secure the new WD drive. I can’t see anything I’m doing differently with how I’m installing the two drives

In the same boat as ya. I’ve tried nearly everything currently out to get a new ssd to work in the deck. No matter what I’ve done, I’ve tried 2 different USB drives, 1 isn’t even picked up, the other gives me this error. I even attempted “cloning” the ssd to the new one using the console short cut in the deck and it just doesn’t even pick up my ssd when I swap it into the “cloned” one. I’m just flustered as all hell because I had no issues upgrading the lcd deck THIS SAME SSD but this ones nothing but issues so far.

If you take a look at my update you’ll see I was able to finally get the drive to be recognized in the recoveryos. I think the issue I had was some combination of taking the recoveryos file as-is from the site instead of extracting it and then also using balena etcher instead of Rufus.

Not sure whether Rufus or using the unzipped file was the issue. Try downloading the steam recoveryos .bz2 file and then extracting it on your computer. Then point balena etcher at the .img file that was extracted. Then boot into the detachable storage (SD card or USB) with the recoveryos and see if you can reimage from there. This is what finally worked for me, but ymmv. Good luck!

Never had the LCD model. This is my first impression of the steam deck. Needless to say, I’m not a fan yet. I have a switch OLED and everything just worked since day one

Might have figured it out. I just got the SD to reimage with the steam recovery OS.

The biggest difference is I UNZIPPED the .bzp steamdeck repair file before writing it to the external SD (USB probably works but it seems way quicker in my experience on an SD card). I also used balena etcher rather than Rufus to write the image to the SD card.

My WD 2tb nvme was not recognized in the boot menu, but was recognized in the recovery OS on the SD card.

Going through setup now and it looks like the wifi portion worked this time around (though it only worked on the 2.4ghz ssid). Steam says it’s installing, so I will update y’all a bit later!

Yeah same with the WiFi. I have absolutely no idea what to do and I’m just using a ethernet cable for now…
