I have really long lunch breaks at college so I decided to just buy one without researching at all. Is there anything big I should know about the thing - anything I need to set up in advance?
Just stick to steam games that have the verfied checkmark and you’ll be fine ;) it works just like you would expect.
its literally so easy to use and straight forward. you buy/download game. install it. play it. done.
Not really, it’s pretty self explanatory as long as you play mostly steam games. Just install and play. Any game marked verified or playable should work fine.
It might be a good idea to buy yourself a skin and/or screen protector. Since you’re on campus I assume you might be roaming around a bit so some sort of sling-bag or backpack (with a zipper-lock, maybe with an airtag inside) might also be a good idea.
Battery life can be a bit tight on some games so a 45W USB-C-PD battery (I prefer a 65W as it leaves some room for other devices, so long as it does 15V @ 3A+)
Oh, and the fall sale ends tomorrow, so if you’ve got games you want that are on sales now’s a good time :-)
Do your own research. Jesus Christ.
There’s probably a handful of people with tips and tricks OP might not find online with ease so coming here allows the community to chime in. Don’t have to go out of your way to be a douche. Jesus Christ.
Searching the damn sun would give Op the info they want. It’s annoying as shit ro see the same questions every 10 minutes because people are too lazy to do research.
Lots of cool customizations you can do with Steam Input, especially the trackpads. Here is a guide on how I configure them. In the post, I link a video where I go more in depth:

There are lots of other YouTube guides you can find if you search “steam deck input”, “steam deck trackpads”, “steam deck gyro” etc.

The number one lost important thing to understand, if it’s your first gaming PC, is that not every game you can buy for it will run well. It’s not a console. Check ProtonDB for compatibility before buying a game for it and getting burned.
If a game doesn’t work properly, check ProtonDB website. Some games need small tweaks or specific proton version to run properly.
If you decide to do any repairs yourself (which you’re highly encouraged to, almost all spare parts are available online) REMOVE THE SD CARD!
So many people accidentally broke their card when opening the case, it’s one of the most important things to remember
My only tip would be to browse steam for a bunch of games you want and put them on your wishlist.
Steam has deeper sales than any console. You should be notified when a game on your wishlist goes on sale. Otherwise, you can easily view your wishlist and filter to “discounted” games to view all games on sale in your wishlist.
You need a minimum 45w charger, I believe. So if you buy a car charger or something, make sure it is at least 45w.
Some games require a little mouse work. You can use the mouse by HOLDING the “steam” button (lower left face button; left thumb) and then gliding across the right track pad with your right thumb.
If you need to enter text, press the “steam” button and the X button, the. Let go. Will bring up the keyboard.
The power button, when pressed and released, will suspend your game. Need to stop playing but not at a save point? Tap the power button and the game will suspend. The screen will turn off. Tap it again to wake back to the game. Holding the power button will power it off completely, so do do that.
Hope you enjoy it! I love it.
