Despite how terrible Burnley and Sheffield United have been so far this season, what’s keeping those two managers in their jobs? At least Luton have managed to adjust to the premier league and are now getting results after a poor start

Who else is out there, that would keep them up, or failing that, would be willing to go down and stick with the team, and try again

    Don’t be stupid

What do you want Burnley to do? They built a team to hold possession and dominate the ball, but it’s not good enough for the prem. They’d be better off getting relegated again then building back up slightly stronger. No point in trying to park the bus with a bunch of possession style players.

I think both clubs have priced a potential relegation into their thinking before the season kicked off. It isn’t a surprise to see them both down there, probably where you’d expect them to be.

Both managers also got their current teams promoted in the first place, if they go down then they’ve got managers with experience of getting out of the Championship.

Burnley have done this before with Sean Dyche, he got Burnley promoted in 2013/14, relegated in 2014/15, then promoted again in 2015/16 and kept them in the PL for five years.

Maybe their owners have faith in their investments and don’t treat the clubs like hotels on a Monopoly board.

Kompany signed a new 5 year contract in May so would presumably be very expensive to sack.

Heckinbottom is contract until 25/26 but clearly knows how to get out of the Championship. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are banking on going back down this season and taking the parachute payments and then him getting them promoted again right away by which point he will be back in the Prem with 1 year left on his contract so they can sack him cheaply if they are struggling again back in the Premi.

The difference between Burnley and Sheff United is Burnley have spent a load of money this year where as Sheff United sold two of their best players in the summer including last seasons top scorer (N’Diaye)

Low expectations. If the expectation is that they’ll be relegated and not win many games then you have to judge what a successful season is another way. It helps that the other promoted teams are similarly poor and the other Prem teams haven’t performed so poorly as to provide much hope. Things might change if Luton continue to win games but right now people are just knee jerking after their 2nd win, which if it wasn’t for Everton’s 10 point deduction, would still leave them in relegation.

Maybe the expectation is relegation and surviving the drop is a bonus. Sacking-worthy performances are where the a club is regressing under certain managers, and staying in the premier league is getting harder by the year unless you are owned by a nation state or a billionaire, and even then it’s not guaranteed.

Heckingbottom’s team was literally sold from under him before the season started, so for Sheff it’s more of a ‘what else can you expect’. The owner is facing financial ruin and this is a parachute payments bid. There has been talk about replacing him, but at the end of the day, the squad just isn’t PL quality.

Because they are competent but the squads are financially outmatched and inexperienced.

It’s not like they have Steve Bruce

I think for Burnley especially, they’re probably looking at the bigger picture. Give the guy chance to learn and if he takes you down, so be it. Let him rebuild and come back. The money from this season alone will fund some new players. Best case scenario, they get a win and some confidence and before you know it, they’re on their way. I don’t think I’d sack Kompany right now if it meant just getting some journeyman in to take us down anyway and then be stuck with a prehistoric style in the Championship.
