Look, I grew up watching Arsenal play good football and win, we once had Hleb and Rosicky in our midfield, they could dribble you with their first touch.
So please, forgive some of us for demanding good football be played even when we win, we are all happy with the 3 points, but the football is shit to be fair, even if we are playing low blocks, 2 rights can co-exist.
“Football is not about suffering. It’s about enjoyment. Control the ball, be friendly with it, try to attack, try to score goals. Of course defending is part of it, but you can defend in a lot of ways" -Johan Cruyff
We can’t have it all. We’ve played entertaining and fluid football a long time, especially under Wenger. Last season we were entertaining as well. The entertaining part can take a back seat this season. I want to win trophies now. I want to see all rivals cry their salty tears.
You have every right to be concerned but those it was Brentford away yesterday. Hleb and rosicky arsenal teams routinely struggled to win those tough away games against the teams with the best low blocks.
Last year we were scoring early which meant we scored often as teams opened up. We also weirdly conceded early a lot. Maybe we’re just trying to find the right balance. Give them a bit more time.
That’s cool. Personally, I want sustained success over prettyball. And I don’t want my team burning out from trying to open up a game against an opponent that’s sitting deep. Romanticised pre-gegenpress memories of an era where we weren’t a serious title contender more than we were isn’t a good argument unless you really don’t mind being a runner up. Because that’s all we were in those times, at most.
You can provide all the quotes you want but this is a sport first and foremost and its about results. And the era of your Rosickys, Hlebs and whoever was one where fans were routinely unhappy. Nobody cared about aesthetic when our season was over. We bemoaned a lack of bottle, injuries and throwing away games due to errors. I see a dramatic improvement in all of that these days and nothing suggests to me we won’t crack the formula in our attacking phases just like we have in the defensive ones.
Unfortunately sometimes its not all on us. Ultimately we want to win, but to play beautiful football and winning against opponents who deadset on stopping our fluidity is hard. Im don’t know much about tactics and stuff but with how almost all team setting lowblock against us, its just not effective to be too beautiful. We are capable of that ofc, just look our games against liverpool or in this season against PSV. Sorry if im wrong.
We loved that era but what exactly did they win? Sensing some heavy nostalgia in this take.
But the way you are talking about our game is like when Spurs fans signed their lives away under Mou/Conte to play absolutely dire shit on the slim chance that they could win them something.
We are still enjoyable to watch and we will end up being way more effective when this season gets long and arduous
