For context my parents have had their toyota sienna for a few years now and the doors would open automatically without issue. However, they just finished paying it off and all of a sudden the doors no longer open automatically. Is this just some weird coincidence or can the dealership just get rid of features whenever they want?

It’s a sign of what is coming, namely vehicle features tied to subscriptions. For example, you buy a car with heated seats, but they only work if you pay for the connectivity package. You later sell this car but the heated seats no longer work for the new owner. Surprise! They need to pay for the subscription.
