Was recommended this laptop by a Best Buy employee:
I plan to use it about 50/50 for video editing and games. Having 1TB of SSD, 16gb of RAM, and a 4070 at this price *seems* to be a great deal compared to other options. I looked into it and found out that the RAM is DDR4, not DDR5.
Should that be a dealbreaker, or is the rest too good to pass up for the price?
A 1080 screen though?
I’d pay the extra $300 and go for the Acer Predator Helios 16”. It has 4070 with 1440 screen I think and the tan should be ddr5. My 15.6” 3070ti from 2022 was $1300 in June and the fan system is crazy good. Thing never gets close to hot if I adjust fan speed. Also build quality is way better than this Tuff thing.
If you have the money I’d recommend the Acer.
I mean, it’s a laptop I’m not expecting that big of a screen anyway. I’ll still take a look at it though, but not sure I wanna spend the extra $300 just for that.
Fan system and build quality were also major factors. Helios has aluminum lid and the body around the keyboard. Only the underside is plastic, but that is better for heat dissapation. The reason razor batteries always bloat is probably because they cook against the aluminum underside. So this doesn’t have that issue either.
But it’s up to you. If you just want performance in games then the tuf will be ok. But for long gaming sessions in the heat a good fan system will do wonders.
As far as DDR4 vs DDR5, don’t assume you can buy a DDR4 laptop and upgrade to DDR5, the CPU determines if your system can run DDR5 or only DDR4. If it comes stock with DDR4 it’s likely the CPU can’t utilize DDR5, but Google the CPU and check before you buy.
