I’ve never seen an ICE car need two engines to drive all four wheels. Why do EVs need 2 motors? Wouldn’t a transmission be cheaper than another motor?

Also allows fine software control of the AWD system. I have an Outlander PHEV with an electric motor on each axle and the AWD and traction system is the best I’ve ever used in 30 years of driving AWD vehicles up and down snowy mountain passes and ski hills for the same amount of time.
