I am picking up my 2024 M2, and I’m coming from a 2021 Charger Redeye which was stolen. I was very vigilant with my Redeye but those are some of the most stolen vehicles. Is that an issue with BMWs or M cars?
Man I am in a similar situation I had a widebody scatpack it was stolen and now I am entertaining an m2 or m4. Does the car feel a lot smaller and more cramped? Part of the reason I went with the challenger is its interior, trunk and rear seat room in a coupe
Far far far less likely. Especially now that BMW keys since like 2018 or 19 or somewhere around there go to sleep after sitting for a few minutes. Meaning even if the key was in your house a relay attack could not be performed. In today’s age for BMWs, you really need the key to steal the car.
Our family’s X5 (2020 model) got stolen in LA. I parked it in a nice upscale garage as well. The signal/key was probably cloned and the theives just took it. It came back though!!!
Make sure to disable comfort access via coding if you want to be diligent
Thanks will have to dig into this
Seriously? That seems dramatic. Just saying.
Get a faraday pouch from Amazon, your key fob constantly transmits and communicates with your car, car jackers amplify this signal with a big antenna to make it seem like the key is right by the car. The faraday pouch will block this.
I’m considering replacing my beloved 392 Challenger for this exact reason. Can’t take it anywhere without worrying constantly.
I came from 392s. Do it you won’t regret it
Untouchable
Really depends on where you live. I live in a nicer area so not a lot of car jacking. I also park in well protected areas. Are you parking mostly in protected spaces (garage, heavy foot traffic area, employee only parking close to your work, ect.)? If your parking on the streets of the city a lot then I would say it’s definitely a higher risk but a lot lower than your red eye.
I live in a nice area and cars are garage kept. Redeye was stolen from a gated Hilton parking lot in a nice area of town.
did the insurance give you money for your charger?
Yes! I think I was fairly compensated.
With no surcharge in your insurance?
Put your key fobs in a faraday box. They sell these on Amazon for like 20 bucks
Depends on where you park it
I’ve owned several SAABs 99s 900s 900SPG in a high crime city. SAABs after the 99s had tank mounted electric fuel pump, accessible threw the trunk . I would cut the positive power wire on the fuel pump, run two wires up under the carpet to front or back seat, and mount a single pole toggle switch that was very easy to reach unnoticed . Flipping the switch would kill power to the fuel pump. When parking the car, I would simply switch the fuel pump off. If someone broke in and could defeated the (between the seats ignition witch) which was quite difficult those cars and start the car, said car would only run for about 15 to 30 seconds then die (with the switch off. ) I got good at being able to flip the on or off unnoticed as I pulled the emergency break. The good thing about a hidden kill switch is, during (God forbid) a car jacking, the kill switch can be turned ‘off’ unnoticed. Done as you exit and surrender the car, the car continues to run for 15+ seconds while the ‘car jacker’ gets in, drives half a block and the car dies, won’t start, the ‘jacker’ bails, you simply get in the car, flip the kill switch back on, drive your undamaged car away. I’ve yet to install a kill switch in our X3 but we no longer live in a high crime area, but im still still considering it. Not sure how difficult it would be in the X3 to run the wires under the carpet, and make the switch reachable yet hidden, i’v actually drilled the appropriate sized hole in the carpet and mounted the switch right threw the carpet under the seat, next to the parking break. Thank goodness we never needed it but it’s a cheap easy mod that can be done on any car with an electric fuel pump. An inexpensive way that Can keep your car from bring stolen or jacked. Just don’t make the switch position obvious or well known. Kinda fool proof, and it might have worked that Dodge too!!
Change locations
Put your keys in a RFID box
Any car can be stolen if the thief wants it bad enough. A lot of BMWs had the key signal cloned from inside the house and used to start the car. Just keep your key far away from where you park or inside one of those signal blockers. The systems are much more complex than what Dodge was using.
I think the new keys also stop emitting after a minute or two of being stationary to prevent those attacks
This is true. And the even newer ones probably uses UWB to make it impossible to relay (this is the right term, not clone) since that’s how the inplemented their Digital Key Plus.
