Have three alternatives for my new rig.

I will use it with 14700K, 64gb ram and 4080.

Z790-E is a bit pricier than I prefer. Actually I don’t need WiFi on desktop computer but all of them have it.

The only difference between Z790-A and Z790-E looks like support for Gen5 SSDs. At this moment I’m going to install a Samsung 990 Pro, i may do without Gen5 SSD in the future, I guess.

Will Asus Rog Strix Z790-A be enough, since it is the cheapest one?

Asus Prime Z790-A Wi-Fi Intel LGA1700 DDR5

Asus Rog Strix Z790-A

Asus Rog Strix Z790-E

Mobos are just feature sets and nothing else. Buy the cheapest mobo that has all the features you want and supports the memory speed you want. There is 0 benefit to overspending on a mobo if you don’t need the extra features

so all i want is DDR5 7200. i have been using a 10gbe intel NIC for years so onboard wifi is worthless to me. i won’t overclock a 14th gen and will set the PL1/PL2 to intel spec, possibly even undervolt. what mobo out there should i be looking at?

Strix Z790-H should be cheaper than Strix Z790-A

You should check if you actually need the A/E features over H.

Yes I agree and I mentioned about it in my response, I just placed an order for it to be paired with 14700K and G Skill 7200 CL34 32gb kit and I had a tough time choosing boards too as it’s almost pointless to spend extra money on useless features, that’s the reason I skipped AM5 build with 7800X3D because boards are too expensive where I live for AM5, even the B650 boards are ridiculously expensive than z790 boards.

I just purchased ROG z790-H gaming Wifi, it is almost similar to A but a bit less on what E offers and it is priced fairly well compared to the other two. You won’t miss out on features from higher end much also the PCIE 5 M.2 is kinda joke anyways with current boards as all boards share lanes with pcie 16 lane and cuts bandwidth when installed in the slot above PCIE 16 slot, I would rather save money than use $500 on useless features which won’t effect day to day use. Also I the H has S1220A audio chip and E has ALC4080 if sound matters to you, S1220A I believe is better of the two from what I heard but nothing compared to external DAC or high end internal sound cards which give supreme quality and only invest in such equipments if you are audiophile or have high end audio equipments.

I dont care about the sound quality. I use a separate USB amp/dac for headphones and speakers are connected via optic output.

Then surely go with H as it’s best bang for buck, I will be using onboard sound temporarily too until I upgrade to AE7 or AE9
