Hi yall! I had some friends show me their Steam Deck’s yesterday and I’m pretty blown away. I currently have a PS5 and a Switch and gave my gaming pc to my father (lives thousands of miles away). The only games I’m really wanting to play on a pc at the moment are the Total War games which I saw are currently not supported by valve.
How often is valve updating the games compatible on the steam deck? How functional is the mouse and keyboard compatibility with the steam deck?
Thanks!
Ignore valves verified status, youtube.com and protondb.com will be your friend for determining actual playability of games.
For total war I’ve only downloaded and played a few of the older games but they are definitely playable on the deck. For controls you won’t be as fast as you would on m+k but you can also pause or slow down the battles in the middle of combat to manage troop movements.
Also just know that people have gotten the warhammer games to work, however they definitely push the deck to its limits so it may or may not be “playable” for you depending on what you consider acceptable graphically, and your willingness to tweak and mess around with settings
Thanks for the reply, Mutantbroom! Got a few follow up questions for ya:
I’ll have to take a look at Protondb for playability of games.
If I bought a dock for the Steam Deck, I’m assuming the m+k functionality should be pretty compatible and smooth right? I’m not too interested in playing the total war games via handheld, I’d like to do it with a mouse and keyboard but it’s great to know that it’s doable!
What have you been playing on yours?
Total war warhammer works very well with mouse and keyboard. For warhammer 2 and 3, use the linux native version from settings instead of windows version as the windows version is unplayable due to crashes. On lowest settings you get around 30fps in warhammer 3.
