Someone rudely on reddit pointed out to me months ago that it was a term used even in the 90s but Tesla seems to have made it more popular for their use of it.
So this is me just passing along what someone told me
I think other companies are basically copying the name since it appears Tesla did not trademark it. So now it just means a big factory making eco products, of which Tesla’s are the most well-known.
It originated there, but has been used for other EV/battery plants for quite awhile. It’s just becoming a genericized term, like band aid and bubble wrap.
It started off that way, but like how a number of people call vacuum cleaners “Hoovers” and PA systems “Tannoys”, Gigafactory is becoming the popular term for a battery factory (and some other factories apparently).
Isn’t gigafactory a Tesla term?🤔
Terrafactory

The Wikipedia article is generic and not Tesla-specific: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigafactory

Modern-day examples would be “Google it” and “Photoshop.”
Whenever someone uses that emoji, you know it’s because they said something stupid.
I use it when replying to stupid people🤔
/u/okaccess304 is making a good point 🤔
No, Tesla did not patent it or first use it. Semiconductor firms have been using the term GigaFab for over a decade.
Patent… A word? Are you sure you know what patents are? So you mean Trademark?
You are right, I was thinking about something else when I wrote this, tricky how mind works sometimes.
If it sounds like cheap shit from a 90s toy commercial, it’s probably musk
