Traditionally, they were two completely different cars but I get it. They’re a lot more similar in size and style now. I still see the 6 as a large performance luxury 2-door. Always had a thing for large 2-doors. The mid 90’s MB S-Coupe is another one I admired. I still put the 6 and 8 in two different categories but I get what you’re saying.
I don’t think the 6 and 8 have ever existed simultaneously and both have always been, primarily, large grand touring 2-door coupes. The E31 was a successor to the E24 in every way, the styling even traces to it. After that car, they left that space in the lineup empty and then resurrected the 6 before ultimately punting it up the nomenclature to be an 8.
Sure, that’s plausible. Maybe the flip headlights vs the shark nose that made me perceive them differently. Also, what their MB market competitor would be and not merely by size comparison: 7 Series-S Class, 3 Series-C Class, 5 Series-E Class, 6 Series- SCoupe/CL Class, 8 Series- SL Class, etc….
The 8 series is just this generation’s 6-series; it occupied the same size and market position, they just moved the number up.

The old 6 series was obviously a 7 series coupe. The old 8 series was its own thing. The newer 6 and 8 series are 7 series coupes.
